What’s New in Rhino 8

Overview

Rhino 8 brings a huge speed boost for Mac users, PushPull workflows, SubD Creases, new modeling tools like ShrinkWrap,, better drafting tools, a more customizable User Interface, a faster Render engine, new Grasshopper data types, and much more. In Rhino 8 for Windows, display modes are even faster & the new real-time display mode allows you to visualize your designs and apply 100’s of photo-realistic materials to your models. Many commands have been rewritten and merged into single commands. These are the highlights…

Built for MAC

Rhino for Mac is faster than ever, running natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, and using the Apple Metal display technology. Blazingly fast 3D drawing, a massive speed boost for Mac users. We’ve also brought the User-Interface on Mac closer to its Windows sibling. Rhino for Mac runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Sub-D

For designers who need to explore organic shapes, SubD is a new geometry type that can create editable, highly accurate shapes. Unlike other geometry types, SubD combines free-form accuracy while still allowing quick editing. New in Rhino 8 are SubD Creases which enable you to create a feature between a smooth and a sharp edge, without adding complexity to the SubD control, great for making fillet-like features.

Modeling: Simplified

Rhino 8 unlocks new modeling workflows — like PushPull — and adds intuitive new features to the Gumball, Automatic CPlanes, and more…

Presentation: Rendering

Presentation is key: during nearly every phase of design, you need to communicate, get “buy-in” from clients, customers, collaborators, etc. Rhino 8 quickly creates beautiful images for your presentations. Whether you are an architect, jeweler, designer, engineer, or artist, Rendering in Rhino brings your models to life. With its extensive library of materials, advanced lighting, and camera controls. Rhino 8 has been improved with the aim of helping you present your work: be it “quick and dirty” or “high-res glossy.” The Cycles engine now offers faster, GPU-accelerated raytracing. Rhino quickly creates beautiful images for your presentations. Whether you are an architect, designer, engineer, or artist, Rendering in Rhino brings your models to life. With its extensive library of materials, advanced lighting, and camera controls UV Mapping is an important step in creating high-quality renderings. Rhino’s UV Editor controls how material textures wrap around their geometry. Fine-tune the mapping to get just the right look.

  • Apple Metal support, making Cycles much faster than Rhino 7 on Mac.
  • Improved rendering speed on NVIDIA cards.
  • Faster on AMD GPUs using AMD HIP.

Rhino Render works as a real-time raytraced display mode, so you get fast feedback on your material, texture, and lighting choices. For “final” renders, work in a dedicated rendering window with access to post effects like fog, glare, and depth-of-field.With major changes to rendering, materials, & real-time photo-realistic display with acceleration from your computer video card. Open the material library panel, and browse or search through hundreds of pre-designed, textured materials, ready to drag and drop right onto your models. The new rendered viewport shows you how they will look in real-time. It’s now easier and faster to present, discuss, make decisions, and iterate… More Info…

Display

Rhino 8’s real-time viewport display modes are fast and use modern graphics hardware features, like GPU-sensitive shaders & memory optimizations. Features include extremely fast 3D graphics, unlimited viewports, shaded, working views, perspective working views, named views, floating views, full-screen display, draw order support, two‑point perspective, clipping planes, and one-to-one scale to view models at full size. Customizable viewport display modes produce stunning, high-resolution output images at interactive frame rates….  More Info…

ShrinkWrap: Meshes

ShrinkWrap lets you create a wrapped mesh from mesh, NURBS geometry, SubD, and Point Clouds. Just about anything! ShrinkWrap can create meshes for 3D printing as it creates a solid union mesh from multiple input objects. It’s ideal for jewelery design as it creates meshes without internal self intersections.

Clipping and Sectioning

Rhino 8 introduces a number of clipping and sectioning enhancements to help support various drafting and fabrication workflows. Clipping allows you to slice through your design, turning off the display of parts of the model. Now with Selective Clipping, you can choose a subset of objects and layers to clip. You can even set a custom depth to isolate a specific part. With complex models, this focuses communication where it matters most. Clipping planes can be used to extract sections through your model to use in prototyping and fabrication processes such as laser cutting. You can also extract slices of a big model to fabricate using CNC routers or 3D printers. Flat cut processes such as laser cutting require you to extract parallel cuts through your model, label them, and lay them on a flat sheet. Rhino supports workflows to extract labeled cuts through 3D models to help with these processes.

Documentation

Modeling is just one part of the design process; you also need to show how to build what is on the screen. Many parts of the documentation workflow have been refined, from a completely reworked annotation-style interface, to better DWG support, and RichText throughout. It’s now easier to convey accurately and clearly the what and the how of your design… More Info…

Make2D

Make2D has been completely rewritten to provide faster, better, cleaner, more customizable, results. Clipping planes are now supported and clipping plane intersections are calculated…More Info…

Rhino Refinements

Small quirks add up to painful paper-cuts over the course of a prolonged modeling session. Rhino’s Surface Fillet commands allow you to create rational and non-rational fillets between two surfaces or a surface and a curve. While FilletEdge needs an edge to make a fillet, Surface Fillets do not depend on joined geometry. This allows for a more flexible setup of base surfaces that get later connected by fillets.Users can now cut geometry using the new Gumball in Rhino 8. FilletEdge fillets are editable, and edibility persists on copies of filleted polysurfaces. Inset offsets edges inward on a mesh, SubD, or polysurface face: an easy way to make sub-faces that can be PushPulled to define a concept in a few clicks. In Rhino 8, hundreds of minor bugs have been fixed, and many disparate – but similar commands – have been consolidated into single commands, making Rhino much more refined… More Info…

Grasshopper

Grasshopper, the world’s most beautiful programming language, Grasshopper has been used in some of the most ambitious design projects of the past decade and – like Rhino – has become a development platform in its own right. Grasshopper provides the solid foundation for many incredible third-party components ranging from physics simulation to robotic control. Baking geometry has always added new objects to your Rhino model. In the past however, you had to maintain copies as new objects got added or delete your old geometry before baking again. Grasshopper now has live baking, so you can update objects without deleting them first. More Info…

Licensing & Administration

Rhino 8 is easier to install, license, and configure. There’s a great new option to license Rhino using the Cloud Zoo allowing organisations with multiple licences to share licences across Windows and MAC computers. Please check out the new System Requirements as well. More Info…
