I'm traditonal, I don't like technology & prefer to hand make.
You still can, a cast ring still needs to be cleaned up, set, and polished. Let's face it, you wouldn't be using a motorised hand-piece, torch, or ultra-sonic cleaner if it wasn't for technology. Also having experience as a bench jeweler is a definite asset when learning CAD.
Does it run on a Mac?
Whilst there is a MAC version of Rhino, it does not yet support any plugin's such as RhinoGold. RhinoGold is Windows-based, so can run on Mac's via Apple's free "bootcamp" software. It requires a copy of Windows 7, 8 or 10, and installs Windows in a partition on your hard drive. We know many MAC users using boot camp to run both MS-Windows and MAC OS on their notebooks without a problem. We recommend you check that your computer can run "boot camp", if so, you can purchase Windows & install the Rhino /RhinoGold trial.

Over the last 17-years, I have seen the speed at which CAD has become accepted by jewellers, both from a manufacturing aspect and from a customer and sales perspective.
From a bench jeweller's perspective, CAD introduces greater precision for stone setting, it speeds-up setting time by cutting seats & pre-notching prongs, and it offers many other benefits of dimensionally accurate 3D printed jewellery.
As a jewellery designer, you should use all of the mediums available to enable your customer to visualise a piece of jewellery. If your customer can not visualise your design, then they will probably not buy from you. It's that simple!
I think it's now mandatory to supply several renderings if your design, so that your customer can gain trust and confidence in you as a jeweller. If someone comes to you with an idea for an ring, you can design it in CAD and e-mail some rendered images of how the piece will look.
These renderings do not necessarily need to be photo-realistic images, but they need to convey the "feeling" or "emotion" of your design. This is a great way to create a "point-of-difference", and to keep the sales conversation and relationship going after the customer has left your shop.
At the end of the day if they decide not to purchase your design, you can add it to your online collection, that way your design time and the renderings can be used for future sales.
Another benefit is that customer quotations can be quickly prepared from the gem and metal infomation contained in the 3D design (eg: quantity/size of gems and metal weight). RhinoGold can accurately tell you how much your design will weigh in a variety of precious metals.
